Bear - "A Miracle for Bear"

On December 1, 2003 Almost Home received a phone call from a woman
owning a Kennel. She indicated that a couple wanted to give up their
dog “Bear”, a 9 year old huge male black lab. The woman owning the
kennel was afraid that if she said no, he would end up at a shelter
where he most likely would be euthanized. She called many rescue

groups but no one would take him. She finally tried Almost Home. We took Bear with open arms. Large
and beautiful he stood. His sweet demeanor stole our heart. We had no place to put him at the time so we
asked her to keep him for a week. The woman called us a week later crying he will not eat and is acting
very depressed. We took him to the Vet and he gave bear an exam and said this dog has a broken heart.
After fianlly getting Bear turned over to us, we put Bear’s story on our homepage as an Urgent plea to
find him a home who would either foster or adopt him ASAP. His weight was dropping dramatically.
A kind woman answered Bears plea for help. She picked him up and again we had him go to our Vet. By this
time Bear was physically and emotionally in trouble. He had developed a horrible cough and was acting
lethargic. The woman took him home and told us that he seemed to be doing very well  and wanted to adopt
him. Then all of a sudden he had a relapse. Almost Home arranged for the woman to take Bear to her vet.
She did, but she left him there. She called us and said she didn't want him anymore. Needless to say we
were devestated. We offered to pay for his medical if she would offer to at the least foster him until
he gained his strength back. She would not. The most she would do was come to the Vet and be with him if
the vet felt he should be put down. Being quite a distance away and it being the day before Christmas
Eve we were beside our selves at Almost Home. We called the Vet and he indicated the dog was old and
most likely had cancer. He recommended Bear be put down immediately. We asked if he would keep Bear
overnight and we will then figure out what to do. The next day we asked for an x-ray. There was no
indication of cancer. We then pleaded with the woman to foster him if the Dr. could stabilize him. She
would not. Amy, our volunteer, drove Bear to MSU Hospital. The Dr. examined Bear and looked at all the
work that was previously done on him. He felt that Bear had a very bad case of pneumonia. He saw no
indication of cancer and agreed with us that Bear deserved a second chance at life.
Almost Home said go for it! The Dr. did and on Christmas Eve, Dr. Beals at MSU called to say Bear is
doing very well " He is not out of complete danger but it sure looks good, and Merry Christmas." I hung
up the phone and cried my eyes out and thanked the heavens for the Miracle for Bear.
Bear is now recovering in the good hands of MSU Veterinary Hospital. They think he will be well enough
to leave on Monday. But, Bear still has no home. No where to go. Every family he has ever known has
turned their backs on him when he needed them most. Bear is in desperate need of a permenant home, or
foster home that can keep him until he recovers completely. ARE YOU BEAR'S MIRACLE?? He is an
exceptional animal with the hopes of finding the home we know he deserves. Please do not turn your back
on Bear as so many have before. Open your heart and  let him know what true love and a real family are.
Please show Bear that love and family mean "forever". Please don’t let Bear’s miracle end.  Email us
today for an application for this miraculous boy!
