Our Urgent Tails

Stories from the Heart
my opinion but most shelters want room for the young animals.
The woman brought Manny to our Pet Adoption and filled out the surrender form and before I could
look at Manny she disappeared. Why? Because Manny was not in good health he wasn’t even in okay
health he was dying. I asked the volunteer to bring Manny over to me. I held him in my arms. Yes,
Manny was just as sweet as this woman said even sweeter. It was 3:40PM Saturday at our Pet
Adoption when I had a moment to examine him. As I was admiring how lovable he was I noticed a large
growth on the side of his neck, his leg was raw with no hair and was dripping with puss. Also he had
another small lump on his other leg. His eyes were thick with mucus and one was half shut. I rushed
him to the Veterinary Clinic I knew they would be closed at 4:00PM. The Vet took one look at Manny
and suggested I have him euthanized he said it would most likely cost about three thousand dollars to
save his life. He said this dog is not adoptable. I said, “How can you say that, he hasn’t even had any
tests done he is acting healthy and happy and he is so sweet?” He said they were closing… decide what
you want. I stood firm and I said, “We at Almost Home treat every animal that comes to us as if they
were our own they become our family”. He became a bit snotty and said, “Okay here is what you will
have to do over the weekend to make him comfortable” and he gave me a list of procedures and medicine
and basically pushed me out the door with a bill for $98.00.  I got in my car and looked at little Manny
and I said “My dear sweet little Manny I will not let anything happen to you as long as I can help it. I
already love you and it pains me to think anyone who meets you would not want to help you. I am
frustrated and angry at your previous owner but I will not let this stop me. I will not let her drain my
energy I will stay strong so I can continue what we do at Almost Home.”
I took him in my arms and sobbed until I had no more tears and he just sat in my arms licking me like
he knew.
That night Cathy Manny’s foster mom took him home.
Manny’s owner certainly lied about Manny’s health but she didn’t lie about his wonderful little spirit.
Lovable, gentle, playful, loves people, kids, animals that’s Manny. Everyone who meets Manny is
captured by his love for life and his people in it.
Manny is housetrained and a good eater and never complains about anything. He is affectionate and
acts as if he is not suffering in anyway. We have had Manny for a couple of weeks now and he has seen
a very good Veterinarian who feels Manny might have a chance at life. He has an appointment on
Wednesday 11-17-04 with one of the best oncologists in Michigan.
The Doctor will decide what treatment Manny will need.
Because he is acting fine this is a good sign that he cancer has only traveled to the two places. He
might need to have his leg removed but dogs do very well with three legs.
Please………pray with all of us at Almost Home that it will be good news for sweet innocent little Manny.
Please….Please… pray for our sweet little Manny.

Manny - Manny Needs Your Prayers......
A woman e-mailed Almost Home on October 28, 2004. This is what she
wrote: “I have a Shih Tzu named Manny that I can no longer keep. I do
not want to choose the wrong family to take him. He is very loving and
wants to be with people all the time. We are unable to keep him any
longer.
He is about 8 years old and in GOOD HEALTH. He is playful, loves
walks and is great with kids.
He MUST leave by this weekend.”
I had room for just one animal that week. I told her I would take him
for fear she would give him to a shelter where he most likely would be
euthanized because of his age. Eight is not very old for a small dog in
