Our Urgent Tails

Stories from the Heart
Valentine - "My Valentine"
It was Mid September around 3:00 in the morning. I was driving on
the Lodge expressway thinking about rescue and all the wonderful
animals we have found loving forever homes for. I never liked driving
this way because half way on the expressway is one of the toughest
areas of Detroit. I often thought how scary it would be if my car ever
broke down. So I would think of all the good things in my life like,
family, friends and the animals and how lucky I am to have the passion
and drive I have for the animals.
When suddenly in the middle of the expressway…a dog? A big black dog with stick up ears falling down then
getting up and then falling down again. I rubbed my eyes thinking it was just late but there she was. I
swerved to the right, dodging cars sticking my hand out of the window to warn people to slow down. I was
finally able to pull to the side. I got out of my car fearing for her life. I couldn’t bear to see what could
happen… I tried to pick her up she was too heavy and she cried. I knew she was hurt terribly. I ran to the
side of the expressway crawling down praying she would follow and she did. There she lay by my side. I was
afraid I would become hysterical because I couldn’t pick her up to put her in my car. Every time I tried,
she would yelp. I tried to waive people down but no one would stop. I lay down next to her and began to cry
and pray at the same time. I was so afraid she was going to die and I couldn’t bare the pain of it.
I told her everything was going to be all right. I
stroked her emaciated injured body. The tips of her
ears were eaten away by insects; her eyes were
filled with pain and fear. I told her I loved her and
I will do everything it takes to save her life.

I grabbed my cell phone and called my Mom and right
when I heard her voice I knew everything was going
to be all right, all of a sudden a shiny black
Mercedes pulled up, out walked a tall, slim, beautiful
woman. I told my Mom everything was okay that someone was here to help…the woman didn’t ask any
questions all she said was her name and she was here to help. Together we tried to lift the dog to my
car. The dog yelped and cried we couldn’t do it ourselves. We needed a more people. I looked up and there
stood two men one with a large towel. They said nothing they just put the towel under the dog and
together all of us carried her to my car. Nothing was said it was as if we were one. I got in my car and
looked back and they were still standing there watching me. I looked ahead of me and then back again and
they were gone.

It was a Miracle. Nothing spoken, a feeling of one.

The dog was silent in the back. I couldn’t see her and was praying she was still alive. I drove home as
fast as I could. Mom jumped in the car and we went straight to the emergency critical care center. Mom
wrapped her in a blanket and the vet techs carried her in.

We sat on the floor with the dog and stroked her back gently. I could feel her bones sticking out on
every part of her body. I looked in her eyes and I sobbed.

How could this happen? Where are your parents? Have you been on your own forever? Her eyes so large
and dark resembling a bear cub. She was so gentle so loving and she trusted me. I got up to spread the
blanket on the floor. She struggled to walk. She lied down on the blanket and I covered her shivering
body… We were waiting for the Vet to read the x-rays it seemed like forever…

As we were waiting, I looked at the dog lying on the blanket decorated with purple and pink valentine
hearts… Suddenly the Vet walked in my heart was pounding. She estimated her injuries to cost
$5,100.00. The Vet suggested euthanasia. “Why I said, can you not help her?” “Of course we can help
her”, the Vet. said “We have the best specialist’s in Michigan”. Then why on earth would we have her put
her to sleep?” “Life is so much more important then money”, we will find a way.

My Mom always says passion + tenacity = success.

We will have success. We will find a way.

The Vet handed the papers to us to sign. In the space stating name it said  “Unknown”

I scratched it out and above it I wrote “Valentine”…

Love,

Lauren
